GRFS: On Good Management and Magic Mushrooms

By: Catherine Haddad from the Chronicle of the Horse

Dear Rita,

The kindest gift you can give your horse is a passport to good health. When we buy horses, take them home and put them in the stable, we also assume responsibility for their happiness and well-being. Like all things in life, the simplest approach you can take is usually the best one.

Assuming good nutrition is a given, I will always stand by the additional three basic principles of GRFS—Good Riding, Footing and Shoeing. These three things are essential to the good health, longevity and happiness of any sport horse. The more you update, improve and implement GRFS—the more likely you are to see improved health in your horses.

I don’t want to play down the role of a good veterinarian in the life of a sport horse. When things go wrong this is the guy you need, but in my experience you only need the vet when your GRFS has failed. So if long-term, successful management is your goal, then pay attention to the following details in the care of your horse.

Good Riding is defined by increased strength, impulsion, self-carriage and elasticity over the competitive life of your horse. Bottom line. We could discuss methods and systems for days, but if your horse is not showing improvement in these four areas over the years that you train him, then you are not practicing good riding.

Good Footing can also be defined by the impulsion and elasticity that it encourages. Your horse should be able to push off the surface he is working on without undue strain. The footing should not suck the impulsion out of his gaits. At the same time, your footing needs to absorb shock and allow the horse to bounce out of it with every stride in order to preserve the health of his joints.

Work 10 horses on your footing at home and then put it to this test without dragging it first. You (yourself without the horse) should be able to sprint across your dressage footing without the boggy feeling of running on a sandy beach. You should not find a hoof print deep enough to twist your ankle. You should not get bruises on the balls of your feet from the hardness of the surface. And a normal number of jumping jacks should not wear you out any more than usual.

This is a tough one, Rita, and I freely admit that I am blessed to live in Germany where footing production has become a finely tuned business. My recommendation for footing can be found at: http://www.ottosport.de/public/

Good Shoeing is defined by your horse’s coronet band. Learn to read it and either weep or rejoice by what you see. Now, I gotta tell ya, Rita, as a good horseman it is not your job to tell the farrier how to shoe your horse. But it is your job to recognize good shoeing when you see it and avoid bad shoeing at all costs. If your horse is badly shod, you can expect your vet bills to skyrocket.

Your farrier should know how to properly balance a foot so that the coronet band is one continuous smooth line, the breakover point is correct, the foot lands flat, and the angles hold true for 5-7 weeks of growth. If your farrier can’t meet these basic standards, find another one. And when you find a good farrier, treat him better than your best friend because he is more important to your competitive success than anybody else.

Congratulations to Meagan Davis and Bentley!

Mushroom Matrix is thrilled to share with you a congratulations wish to Meagan Davis and Bentley as they head to Frankfurt, Germany to represent the United States in the FEI World Cup Dressage Final for Young Riders to be held December 15-19, 2010. Meagan has worked with determination throughout the year to earn this invitation and has had some remarkable and memorable rides with Bentley. She and Bentley averaged 70.475% during the competition season and now she will have the opportunity of a lifetime in her last year of competition as a Young Rider.

Meagan and Bentley are fortunate to have the horse transportation and rider accommodation expense covered by the generosity of the event organizers and sponsors. There will however be additional expenses that they will incur and to that end, there was a fundraiser dinner and silent auction event held in Rhinebeck, NY on November 6th, 2010. Even if you were not able to make it to the event, you can still make a contribution to Meagan and Bentley’s success by clicking here http://www.prixstgeorges.com/Site/Click_on_the_donate_button_to_buy_tickets_%40_$50_each.html

and making a donation!

ECP Matrix became a part of Bentley’s daily routine a little over 2 months ago and Meagan credits the focusing effect of the product to helping her and Bentley gain the competitive advantage that they needed for the final push at Saugerties and Devon. We are very excited to be taking this trip with Meaghan and look forward to supporting both her and Bentley in their efforts in Germany and beyond!

Best wishes and congratulations to both Meagan and Bentley!

Catherine Haddad, World Renowned Dressage Rider and Trainer uses Mushroom Matrix

Take a look at what Catherine had to say about Mushroom Matrix.

Those of you who have asked me, “What do you do for maintenance on your top dressage horses?” have probably met the reply, “Nothing. There is no substitute for GRFS: Good Riding, Footing and Shoeing.” (Good feeding goes without saying.)

That said, I have recently begun testing medicinal mushrooms and while they are no substitute for GRFS, I am now prepared to use them permanently for the long term maintenance of my horses’ health. These mushrooms are visibly effective. Here are the first of my stories:

1) One horse in my stable suffers from mild laminitis. While he has had the best medical treatment and shoeing available, he has been slightly lame on one foot for 2 1/2 years. -After 3 weeks on a mushroom supplement called MRM Matrix, he trotted sound on the lunge line. -I ran out of the product after four weeks. Five days later, he was lame again.

-I put him back on the mushrooms after a 10 day break and within 4 days he was sound again.

-He is still sound today and he will stay on the supplement.

2) Another horse in my stable is a notorious shyer with lots of underlying tension. He has a difficult time focusing on his work. He also has shivering syndrome which worsens under stress.

-After two weeks on the mushroom supplement called ECP Matrix, his ability to focus was markedly better.

-After four weeks on ECP he competed at Stuttgart without a single panic attack and minimal distractions. He is much more relaxed and focused.

His shivering is more manageable now.

-Also, a sarcoid that has slowly enlarged on his neck over the last four years, has nearly disappeared.

The mushroom supplements are made from 100% pure, organic, whole mushrooms—kiln-dried and crushed into powder—and here comes the best part: negative doping!!! I am trying some of the other mixtures offered on other horses right now—Muscle Matrix, Hoof Matrix, Joint Matrix etc. I will update this page with more results as they come in. In the meantime, I’m taking mushroom and colostrum supplements myself and can honestly say that my energy level and general alertness is the best it has ever been. I feel 10 years younger, especially in my mind. In the face of ever aggressive flu viruses and controversial vaccines, I am relieved to take a powerful immune modulator that will help my body fight these various bugs this winter season. In general, all medicinal mushrooms are powerful anti-oxidants and immune modulators. They contain natural fiber, L-ergothianine and chondritins. Studies are showing their effectiveness against tumors in breast and prostate cancer, auto-immune diseases, general inflammation and many other health related problems. Supplements are available for humans, horses and dogs.

Thank you Catherine for sharing your thoughts and experiences with us!

Elto, my horse, was bitten by a rattlesnake

Elto, my horse who was bitten TWICE by a rattlesnake is doing FABULOUS.
Long story-short: he was on 6 scoops of the ECP formula since it's what I had, divided
into 4-6 feedings a day for the first 5 days. He was weaned down to
3 scoops a day where he is right now. The horse also had the
benefit of whole food smoothies, whole food diet, some Theracell, a
ton of homeopathy, ECP and he healed in 6 days, unheard of as I hear
from my vets. They say the progress he has made in the 6 days is
typical for a horse after TWO WEEKS of conventional treatment. Elto
had no drugs, other than a tetanus shot since snakes carry
clostridial bacteria.

Vets want to know my protocol and I have an invitation to publish
this as well as it is unheard of from what they know. I've
documented it and am ready to use this experience to move forward in
the work that I believe in...considering the WHOLE horse...and what
a perfect example of how well it can work in a very tricky situation.

Benefits of Medical Mushrooms

For centuries, traditional Asian medicine has included mushrooms for the treatment of a variety of health ailments. The wealth of historic information passed through the generations, has now been corroborated with over 2,000 peer-reviewed scientific articles. The National Institute of Health documents in its library both the nutritional and medicinal benefits of mushrooms. The mushroom is a complex organism that contains several thousand natural enzymes, nutrients and proteins in the correct ratio for maximum nutritional benefit.

Mushrooms improve health through strengthening the immune system with substances such as terpenoids and heteropolysaccarides (amongst them beta-glucans). Mushroom also contain powerful anti-oxidants, such as L-Ergothioneine. L-Ergothioneine cannot be produced or synthesized by the human or animal body, but is found in abundance in mushrooms. L-Ergothioneine plays a key role in protecting cells from oxidative damage, thereby reducing chronic inflammation and disease associated with oxidative damage including but not limited to Heart disease, diabetes, arthritis, fibromyalgia, Alzheimer’s disease, cancer and early aging.

graph-one.jpg

Study results of white blood cell (WBC) counts in 25 healthy horses. This one month study shows an average increase of 20%. A significantly improved immune response is now available to scavenge aberrant cells, as well as viral and bacterial infectious agents.

Medicinal mushrooms, particularly cordyceps, have important properties in enhancing athletic performance through increasing the oxygen carrying capacity of the blood and increasing the synthesis of ATP – the energy currency of the muscle cell. In combination with high-antioxidant levels to counteract the bi-products of exercise, athletes’ utilizing cordyceps and other medicinal mushrooms are able to train more effectively for longer periods of time, and recovery more quickly.

graph-two.jpg

Study results of hemoglobin counts in 28 healthy horses. This one month study shows an average increase of 11%. Increased hemoglobin improves oxygen and carbon dioxide transport to and from the mitochondria. Increased mitochondria efficiency produces an increase in ATP, the cells energy currency, which is used in every cellular process. Improved cellular efficiency is vital to a horses’ health.

The most unique feature about the mushroom as a medicinal supplement is that it not only encompasses the components needed to create and maintain a healthy body but it also contains the chemical mechanisms needed for the body to utilize the components quickly and completely in a 100% organic-certified product. Some of the components that are unique to our mushrooms are L-Ergothioneine, Beta-Glucans, polyphenols, essential vitamin, minerals and trace minerals along with integral enzymes and proteins. L-Ergothioneine is probably the most important and potent of the antioxidants found in mushrooms. Analysis of Mushroom Matrix Products indicates superior levels of L-ERgothioneine.

Mushroom Matrix through time

Mushroom Matrix’s history dates back to 20 years of growing fresh, organic mushrooms in San Marcos, California, just north of San Diego. Mushroom Matrix was responsible for introducing many new fresh Asian mushrooms to the North American marketplace including Maitake, King Trumpet and Beech mushrooms.

Pursuing the nutritional applications of medicinal mushrooms, Mushroom Matrix set out in 2005 to research and obtain the most effective and potent strains from around the globe. Ten specific mushroom strains were identified and obtained by Mycologist, Steve Farrar, each possessing unique bioactivity. The potencies of these rare strains are consistently maintained by keeping the original cultures preserved with liquid nitrogen storage technology. Proprietary methodologies to produce and process both the fruit body and the mycelial stages of the selected strains were subsequently developed. The result – a potent dehydrated powder of 100% Organically Certified mushrooms – now combined into powerful, targeted blends for our Mushroom Matrix Products.

The ten powerful strains acquired by Mushroom Matrix include:

  • Shiitake (Lentinula edodes)
  • King Trumpet (Pleurotus eryngii)
  • Maitake (Grifola frondosa)
  • Shimeji (Hypsizygus marmoreus) Himematsutake (Agaricus blazei)
  • Niu-chang-chi (Antrodia camphorata)
  • Chong cao (Cordyceps militaris)
  • Reishi (Ganoderma lucidum)
  • Lion’s Mane (Hericium erinaceus)
  • Turkey Tail (Trametes versicolor)

An Introduction to Cosmetic Applications of Mushrooms

In Asia, mushrooms have been used as food and medicine for thousands of years now. In old China and Japan, their goodness was appreciated so much that they were reserved for royal families. It is no surprise that these mushrooms are now proposed as highly active ingredients in cosmetic products.

But in the western culture, the consumer is more suspicious about mushrooms. To introduce such ingredients in cosmetic products, you need to be sure of the nature and origin of mushrooms, because some of them could be dangerous. So you need a specialist to certify the good choice of safe mushrooms and also to confirm their benefits.

Pleurotus eryngii is well known for its multiple benefits and it is a slow growing, very durable mushroom. Its consumption would appear to reduce cholesterol levels and has been attributed anticancer properties with a high nutritional value and a high level of vitamins, proteins, beta glucans and non-saturated fatty acids. Yin tonic in traditional Chinese Medicine, it is considered to rejuvenate and strengthens the skin, boosting resistance against signs of ageing. The same claims for other mushrooms present in the formula, such as "Cordyceps", known for it's energetically properties, and the Japanese mushroom "Reishi" for its capacity to "wake-up the organism" and known as a booster of longevity.

Food research and development continue to have a specific interest in mushrooms, in particular in analyzing the properties of beta glucans, a biologically active polysaccharide (work of Institute of chemical Technology in Prague, Czech Republic) present in such vegetables (source : An. Fletcher, 17/05/2005, "Prague stakes claim as a vital centre of food science"). "Cultures that consume a lot of mushrooms such as Chinese and Japanese tend to have long life spans, so we are investigating this". The Prague's Institute of Chemical Technology is looking to find out whether this beta-glucan can improve human immunity systems.

One can quote many different products on the cosmetic market, which contain mushroom extracts:

Johnson & Johnson under the brand Aveeno/Active Naturals recently launched a new line of skin care products named "Positively Ageless". (See the "Exfoliating cleanser" below). The company chooses to formulate and communicate with active ingredients such as shiitake and reishi mushrooms to strengthen their position in the anti-aging products area. As reishi, shiitake is also a well known Japanese mushroom used for its said immuno-stimulant properties.

Even in make-up, REVLON, in its last anti-aging foundation "Age Defying" uses a "Botafirm complex" with Fomes officinalis (mushroom) extract mixed with other vegetables and flower extracts. "Botafirm" is said to "reduce fine lines by 50%, in two weeks", which is a strong claim for a make-up product.

Consequently, today the interest and knowledge of the benefits derived from vegetal ingredients, for the skin, are continuing to grow in research and cosmetic development fields. Once again, the trend of using organic and natural products is being followed.

Mushroom Matrix Antioxidants

Antioxidants: All living organisms including horses are exposed on a daily basis to attacks by free radicals, also called reactive oxygen species. Survival and minimization of harmful effects free radicals requires a powerful antioxidant defense system.

Several of nature's most powerful antioxidants and synergistic enzyme matrix systems that do not exist outside unprocessed whole foods are found in significant abundance in certain specially-grown species of exotic, medicinal mushrooms.

• L-Ergothioneine (LE), a substance mushrooms have in abundance, is one of the most potent antioxidants in the world. ONE unit of L-ERGO equals approximately 7, 000 units of Trolox (water soluble vitamin E). What is most fascinating is that mammals cannot synthesize L-ERGO but contain a unique TRANSPORT SYSTEM to ensure delivery of this essential nutrient to key cells and sites of oxidative stress.

• Beta Glucans
- Potent and proven immune response potentiators and modulators.

• Polyphenols -
Potent biological response modifiers.
• Organic Selenium compounds - An essential trace element with important antioxidant and metabolic energy activity.

• Amino Acids - Essential amino acids occurring in mushrooms increase the biological value of equine feeds.

• Glycoproteins
- Key building blocks of the immune system, antibodies, hormones, connective tissue, and are important for cellular recognition and defense.

The effects and benefits of improved antioxidant and enzyme food matrix status are significant and include improved stress response as evidenced by improved mental focus, external bio-markers of improved health such as improved coat sheen, muscle tone, digestion, stamina, growth, recovery, and reproductive potential.

More about Mushroom Matrix

Experience one of nature's most powerful forces- The Matrix. Fueled by mushrooms used for centuries in traditional Asian medicine, the Matrix is a proprietary blend of natural mushrooms organically grown in the US. All blends are grown under conditions that allow for optimal uptake and production of essential vitamins, antioxidants and enzymes. The results: supplements that supports your horses health, training and optimized performance!

Mushrooms are a unique form of life:
Scientists estimate that mammals share approximately 30% of the same DNA as the fungal kingdom (versus 10% with the plant kingdom)

Mushrooms have an immune system (unlike plants) which provides natural antibiotic, immune enhancing substances to combat disease and illness.

A new organic way to supplement horses

Mushrooms are one of the oldest foods in existence and particular mushrooms are very rich in nutrients fed to horses from synthetic or animal sources.

Calm Performance Matrix is a focus product containing 3 mushroom species of specific chemistry and activity. Calm Performance Matrix contains Cordyceps militaris, which is a COX-2 inhibitor (anti-inflammatory), and improves oxygen uptake by 30% while increasing ATP by 25% which all contribute to increased performance. Calm Performance Matrix also contains very specific glycol-proteins that have specific cell receptor signal transductance pathways to DNA expression. This activity is primarily derived from the Turkey Tail (Trametes versicolor) mushroom and works explicitly with the horse’s immune response. Additionally, the product contains a large percentage of the King Trumpet (Pleurotus eryngii) mushroom mycelial biomass and fruit bodies. The King Trumpet mushroom is another COX-2 inhibitor but, as or more important, also contains significant amounts L-ergothioneine and anti-oxidant cycle enzymes, which significantly improve cell integrity in responding to oxidative stress. This is significant in producing the “calming” effect of Calm Performance Matrix. This “calming” effect is generally the first response horse owners and trainers notice in their horses after administering Calm Performance Matrix.

Prevent • Protect • Perform

For centuries, certain mushrooms have been consumed for their wellness benefits and have been recognized for their powerful functional health support and wellness aspects in addition to their flavors and textures. Mushroom Matrix (M²) has developed specialized nutraceutical mushroom formulas designed to provide the maximum health promoting effects to the Equine industry.

The secret lies in the use of whole bioactive entities with potent enzymatic functions and providing the horse with un-denatured antioxidant enzymes and adjunctive natural health components in a highly absorbable bio-available and active form. Grown under strict GMP Standards in San Marcos California, M² blends are Certified Organic formulas with guaranteed potencys. The products are pure unadulterated CERTIFIED ORGANIC nutraceutical mushroom powders carefully cultivated & harvested with proprietary processing methods to ensure preservation of optimal potency of natures most powerful natural synergies of antioxidants, enzymes, amino acids, beta glucans and more in a sophisticated nutritional matrix.

The foundation of performance is health. The basis of health, strength, and stamina is a powerful immune system. Science is now demonstrating that nature has many potent nutrients that support & activate the immune system. Many of these impressive and beneficial substances are found in mushrooms. MUSHROOM MATRIX has developed proprietary cultivation methodologies for selected species of extensively researched mushrooms. Recognizing the different constituents and medicinal modes of activity of each mushroom species, several unique M2 Matrix Mushroom Formulas have been created to address specific equine health and performance issues.

With these formulas, it is now possible to naturally support, restore, and build the strength and stamina required for peak performance and consistency. We are entering a new age for realization of genetic performance potential combining the benefits and wisdom of scientific and classic training with natural, organic whole foods as nature intended.

Why continue to use synthetic chemicals as nutritional supplements without any enzyme backup system to promote proper bio-availability and utilization? Such artificial additives may not be absorbed or fully utilized and can interfere or be a less effective substitute for the real preferred natural substrates. This can never produce peak consistent performance over time.

Collectively, M2 Mushroom Matrix Formulas contain whole natural proprietary mushroom matrix blends with certified cultured levels of transporters and antioxidants to provide needed protection and enhancement without having to administer synthetic chemicals/nutrients with questionable absorption, cell penetration, and physiologic effect.

Special Bioactive Mushroom Matrix blends provide:

  • The most powerful anti-oxidative and enzyme properties known in any
    food product.
  • Oxidative stress support.
  • Natural immune supportive agents.

Jane Hannigan, US World Cup Rider, Team Matrix Member

“Mak had a tendency to be tense and rather spooky. So, we tried the Mushroom Matrix and he’s calmer and taking the training better. In addition, he’s building more muscle. In fact, he’s packing on the muscle to the point that someone asked me what I was doing that was so different and I said that I had put him on the Mushroom Matrix. Mak has been feeling stronger and stronger and is really able to handle the work. I can now ride him a couple times a day, whereas in the past, it would be one hard work out and that was it.

I’d absolutely recommend the Mushroom Matrix to other people. A horse that needs to be really focused and needs help with the emotional side of the training can certainly benefit.”

Jane Hannigan, FEI-level dressage rider and trainer speaking of the benefits for her Grand Prix horse, Maksymilian

Come To The U.S. Dressage Selections For The WEG!!!

Check out this new article written by: Catherine Haddad

Dear Rita,

I hope you are planning your trip to the USET Team Headquarters right now! Winyamaro, who firmly believes that he is the sexiest horse alive, is demanding spectators for our Selection Trials. He traveled a long way to show off his cool moves, so please don’t let him down.

I visited the team headquarters yesterday and had a look around at all the super renovations. New footing in both the indoor and outdoor arenas is a welcome start. The footing comes from a German supplier that just replaced my footing back in Vechta, and I don’t mind telling you that with the right amount of moisture and grooming, it is fantastic.

I barely recognized the renovated indoor arena. Lighter, airier, larger, and with brand new kickboards and mirrors—Gladstone is now a modern, professional training center to be reckoned with.

Winyamaro’s stall is in the upper barn, and I was very proud to see his name printed on the little slip of red, white and blue paper. Ahh, the small details, Rita! W and I will move in on Monday and start gearing up for the first competition on the weekend.

ARE Y’ALL GOING TO BE THERE TO WATCH??? Especially for those dressage enthusiasts who can’t get to the WEG in Kentucky, at Gladstone you will get to see America’s finest compete for the three open spots on the dressage team.
